Level Up Your Running Game with Breeze

Planning a trip to run your next 5K? Look no further than the runway of the airport you are traveling to. That’s right, some airports allow you to race right on their runways. Dash against planes taking off nearby, experience the tarmac firsthand, and go for that personal record on one of these flat courses. Some running enthusiasts at Breeze recently traveled to Evansville, IN, to participate in their annual 5K on the runway. Learn more about the race and level up your running game at your next local 5k.

The Evansville 5K On the Runway Experience

It’s not often that you get to race on the same runway that planes land on, so we knew we had to take advantage of this amazing opportunity. Evansville’s 5K was hosted on the airport’s local runway and featured aircraft from the Evansville Wartime Museum. There was plenty to do, including tours of the museum, booths, photo opportunities, and races for everyone.

The event kicked off with a Kids’ Dash at 8:30 am. Children raced back and forth on a small stretch of the runway, competing for first prize. The real party started when the 5K began at 9 am. With over 900 racers registered, the large runways had plenty of room for everyone to run at their target pace. Families also enjoyed a one-mile walk that started briefly after the 5K.

Out on the course, runners zigzagged across different runways to complete the race. Throughout the event you could see planes landing overhead and in the distance in separate sections of the airport. All runway markings and signs were still there, making for the perfect photo opportunity. During the race, runners could even join in on a limbo competition, see airport firetrucks and planes along the course, and jam out at music stops along the way. Whether you are going for your next personal record or just enjoying running among the planes, 5Ks on the runway have something for everyone.

Things To Do In Evansville

After the race, we had time to explore more of the town. Bosse Field, located close to downtown Evansville, is the third oldest baseball stadium in the United States still in use. We were able to catch a game as the Evansville Otters took on the Florence Y’alls. The stadium is a gem and was even featured in the film A League of Their Own.

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, look no further than Pangea Kitchen. We loved their menu, full of pizzas, Thai food, and homemade desserts. Our favorite, the mushroom pesto pizza, did not disappoint.

After lunch, we went and explored Wesselman Woods, the oldest urban virgin forest in the United States. With over 200 acres of trees, 300 species of wildflowers, and 150 species of birds and mammals, this forest is sure to turn some heads.

The night finished with a visit to Entwined, a local Wine and Cocktail Bar. Their upscale cosmopolitan vibe and curated list of fine wines and craft cocktails did not let us down. Entwined is a perfect way to kick off the night or help you wind down after a busy day.  Whatever the occasion, they have the drinks and bites to go along with it.
