The ceremony happens every 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the season, and commemorates those who have passed in the line of duty and have never been found or identified. 

Afterwards, take the Metro into the city and check out the many free or inexpensive museums offered there. One highlight is the National Archives, where you can see original documents including the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Check out the many Smithsonian museums featuring artifacts representing aerospace innovation and American and natural history. The National Gallery of Art is filled with thousands of works representing several different periods across humanity, including works by da Vinci, Titian, Picasso, and Mary Cassatt. While in the area, also look for the U.S. Capitol building where the House of Representatives and the Senate meet to perform their legislative duties. 

Evening is an excellent time to tour the National Mall, with its countless notable monuments and memorials lit up in the dark. If you visit in the spring, you may be lucky enough to see the cherry blossoms in bloom around the Tidal Basin. View the staggering Washington Monument pointing across the reflecting pool to the Lincoln Memorial. Take a peek through the fence at the White House, where the president lives.  

Pay homage at the memorials for WWII, Vietnam, and Korean War veterans. Enjoy the serene Constitution Gardens and sheltered areas around the MLK Jr. and FDR Memorials. Finally pay a visit to the massive rotunda at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and read the historic quotes etched into the walls. When you’re ready for dinner, head north to the Downtown area where you’ll find many popular restaurants offering cuisine from around the world.
